How to Apply to Indiana University: Admissions FAQs

At Indiana University, we welcome a wide range of students—first-year undergraduates, transfer and returning students, international students, graduate and professional applicants, and online learners. No matter where you are in your academic journey, we’re here to guide you through the application process.

How to apply to each IU campus

Along with official transcripts, find out what each individual IU campus requires. Remember that IU is test-optional, which means ACT and SAT scores are not required to apply.

Your admissions questions, answered

Who can apply to IU?

IU offers opportunities for degree-seeking and nondegree students alike, including:

  • First-year undergraduate students
  • Transfer students from other colleges or universities
  • Returning IU students
  • International students seeking a U.S. degree
  • Graduate and professional program applicants
  • Students earning a degree fully online through IU Online
  • Students who want to take classes without declaring a degree (nondegree students)

Which application should I use?

  • Undergraduate (U.S.)– Apply via Apply IU or the Common App (Bloomington, Indianapolis, Northwest only).
  • International Undergraduate– Use Apply IU or the Common App, plus required international documents.
  • Graduate & Professional– Apply directly through the program’s website.
  • Online Degrees– Start with the IU Online application.

You only need to submit one application type per campus.

How do I apply for financial aid?

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible.

  • Campus priority deadlines vary—submit early for best scholarship and aid consideration.
  • Also explore IU’s Scholarships and Awards.

Do I have to choose a major now?

You’ll be required to choose a major* you’re interested in at each campus (or a degree program** if you’re applying to IU Online). This just helps us to do a better job of guiding you based on your goals and interests. You can always change your major later.

*A major is a general area of focus for your undergraduate studies.
**A degree program is a specific course of study for earning a certain degree.

Not sure what you want to major in? That’s totally okay—lots of incoming students start college without declaring a major! Just look for the Undecided or Exploratory option, or choose a General Studies option. Your choice won’t affect your campus admission decision, and you’ll be able to choose a different major later if you change your mind.

What are the application deadlines?

Deadlines vary by campus and program. Apply by the earliest deadline if you are applying to multiple campuses.

What’s different for international students?

  • Pay a $65 application fee per campus.
  • Submit official transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and other required documents listed by each campus.

How do graduate and professional applications work?

Graduate and professional programs have their own application processes and deadlines. Visit your program’s site for requirements.

What happens after I apply?

You’ll receive communication directly from each campus you applied to, with instructions on:

  • Tracking your application
  • Submitting additional materials
  • Enrollment steps if admitted
